Is this something that's standard? How much? When would we give it to her - early so it can help with her Christmas shopping, or during the last pay before Christmas? We pay her weekly, if that matters.

When my daughter was in home care, we gave a gift for Christmas. Generally spent from $30-40 dollars, which was 25% of her weekly pay. We also gave her two children small gifts as well to thank them for sharing their mom/home/toys all year. We chose to do this because we could not afford a generous bonus. I am sure a cash bonus would be greatly appreciated. I would give the bonus the last day you attend before holidays. Likely her Christmas shopping will be done long before December rolls around.
In my centre, we generally receive gifts or gift cards from parents. GC's to the LCBO, Chapters, Tim Horton's, candy/chocolates, gift baskets with bath supplies, candles.
I gave my home provider a 60 gc to the spa I go to for a massage!
Holy nice mom Lisa! lol.
We usually get little gifts, and not many at that. One mom does Mary Kay, so she gives us some little things, and we get a picture of the boys.
One gives us $5 or $10 in Timmy's Gift Certificates.
We've never received money, or anything more than a few dollars.
When parents do give gifts though, it's generally the last day before "vacation".
