Hello All,
I just joined this group and i have been able to read a few comments and posts which I find educative as well. I am currently in Tokyo working as an Assistant Teacher an I am hoping to pursue a career in ECE in Canada. I will commence my online course in ECE by an accredited ECE online school:Pacific Rim Early Childhood Institute Inc.2120 Bear Hill Rd. Saanichton, British Columbia V8M 1X7. I also learnt that I could apply for an Assistant Teaching certificate once I complete two - three major courses in BC and some provinces where they are accredited. The major challenge is acquiring the First Aid Certificate because I would require one, but it has to be Canadian standard and I don't know how I would go about it.
1st challenge- Can i get employed when I do complete my courses and still have outstandings on my practicums and First Aid certificate because I was advised that practicum is better in a school in Canada for the experience?
Can I get employed and then do my practicums with that school and also get my First Aid?
Any advise or information would really help at this time. Sorry for the long text. I just didn't know how else to explain without being mis-understood.It's pretty difficult living in country where Japanese is all that is spoken and English is about 20%.
Thank you so much for your time.

I personally would be very hesitant to hire someone who has studied ECE via correspondance or on line. What about completing fields placements?? You will also want to check with the specific province in Canada where you wish to work to see if the school is recognized by the Ministry as an accredited teaching institution - DON'T TAKE THE SCHOOL'S WORD ON IT. One of my teachers took an ECE correspondance course here in Ontario only to find out later that the Ministry did not accept it - all her money went out the window. Your best bet is honestly to try to come to Canada and enroll in a reputable community college. Best of luck.
I completed 1/2 of my ECE diploma online. It was a great experience. I still had to do field placements, just as I did on site. It was a great way to work full time in child care while going to school. I found my assignments etc were much better with being on site with the kids 40 hours a week. However, it was through the local community college and not one of the career colleges that loves to advertise on TV.
Here in the province of Ontario, all ECEs need register with the College of ECEs. This is not run by the Ministry but funded by the province. ECEs need to renew their membership with the College of ECEs every year. Those who are not registered are not eligible to work as an ECE in Ontario.
Since your credentials are out of province, you will first need to apply to the College of ECEs to get your credentials recognized as an in-province ECE. Once they grant an in-province ECE, you will then be required to be registered with the College. Once registered, you can work as an ECE in Ontario.
I have good news for the poster of this question and possibly others who like to persue distant education: I just received confirmation that the PRECEI is recognized by the College of ECEs in Ontario provided you obtain a "DIPLOMA" and not a certificate. So make an inquiry and make sure you get a diploma and you're good to go.
Hello Gord,
Thank you for your response.
Field placements are mandatory in the course and its about 3 practicums stages. I am not there yet and I hope to be able to come to Canada for the practicums but just in case I cannot, I have to do them in Tokyo and send the recordings over to the school. They are all graded.
The correspondence school is www.earlychildhoodeducator.com and they are recognized in about 6 or so provinces in Canada. I checked the provinces and found that its true but you can also help me double check since you are more vast in this field.
Thank you again...
Thank You Andrea.
Its a good experience too and so far as well. I work part-time so I cannot get a full time enrollment here plus English is not a first language so its not easy at all.
Mine is www.earlychildhoodeducator.com
I hope its recognized as they say...
thanks again...
Hello Leo,
Thank you. I am aiming at a diploma so hope that is a good one.
please can you give me the full term for PRECEI? Thank you so much.
My school is www.earlychildhoodeducator.com
if you have any details about this school, please let me know....thanks again...
Hello Everyone,
I started the course already and its going well. Like I posted earlier the link is www.earlychildhoodeducator.com
If anyone has taken courses with them or has any information to share, please let me know. I would really appreciate all data now.
I am hoping I can get a school in Canada to employ me when the time comes for my practicums...about 3 stages of practicum. Does anyone have an idea if its possible to apply for practicums sessions/volunteer from outside Canada?
Thank you so much again.
have a good week.
Rgds,
I googled PRECEI and found nothing related to ECE?? Regardless, if you have the opportunity, aim to get your diploma through a community college. It gives you the opportunity to talk to faculty face to face, gives you PRICELESS field placement experience, and the opportunity to discuss with other ECE students
Hello Gord,
Thanks for the advise. I am not in Canada at the moment so a placement through a community college is almost impossible at the moment. It sounds like a great experience but I have to make do with what I have now till I get to come to Canada. I wish I had such opportunity here but not so. Pls. what does PRECEI mean?
Thanks again.
www.mcf.gov.bc.ca/childcare/ece/pdfs/training_institutes.pdf
This is a list of approved training institutions offering ece programs, directly from the gov bc website, ministry of children and family development. Pacific rim institute is listed.
Nissi, PRECEI is the acronym for the online school you are attending.
How are your classes going?
Hello Everyone,
Thank you for all your comments and words of encouragement. Andrea, My online course is going on well and I just received my Assistant ECE Certificate/License to Practice in BC. I really am happy. Now I am seeking employment from BC....anyone who needs an Asst ECE in BC and is willing to hire me? I'm still taking the other courses though and Pacific RIM/PRECEI just increased their fees for international students from $595to $845 :-/ I had to put the next unit on hold for a while because that kind of money means saving for a while to pay, but I should start that in April since i have saved for it now. I really desire Canadian ECE experience so anyone out there willing to hire me would make my day...Thanks again everyone...
