Where Daycare Professionals and Ideas Come Together

What is Ask An ECE?

I have been searching for years for a place where child care workers could come together to share ideas, ask questions and get straightforward, honest answers from people who had been there before and understand. Child care is an interesting world we work in and really isn’t like most other jobs. It’s not your standard 9-5. We take home our problems and our friends and neighbours ask our advice on child care matters on weekends and holidays. It’s a lifestyle. We are constantly “in daycare mode”. Our kids see us at the mall and are shocked we do not live at the daycare centre. Oh, and we call them “our” kids. People think I am crazy when I say I have 22 kids. I celebrate 22 birthdays, kiss 22 sets of booboo’s, tie 44 shoes many times a day, keep track of 22 hats/coats etc., celebrate hundreds of loose teeth, and potty train close to 20 kids a year. Let’s see the VP of finance do that!

We do it because we love it and the rewards may not be monetary (we certainly didn’t go into the field for the pay cheque!), but the hugs and love we get is more than enough. So, welcome to AskanECE, join now and be a part of our community. No one said our job was easy, but we’re here to help any way we can.

I've become a bookworm

I used to read a novel or two a week. Then I became a parent and my reading consisted of I Will Love You Forever and Dear Zoo over and over again. I am still a parent, but battling the "terrible twos" has forced me to seek outside help. So off to www.amazon.com I went and ordered my own library of toddler survival guides. It's been a few weeks and I must admit I am in love with three of these books. So much so, I am using their advice at work and at home.

"Say It Ain't So" is Right!!!!!!!

Dollarama, long been my go to place for ECE supplies, is upping it's prices. Come early Spring it will no longer be a dollar store but a $1 plus store. This chain has single-handedly kept my programming budget, within budget, for the past 6 years. I am sure you've noticed, there is not a lot of money to be had in child care these days. Where will we go for cheap craft supplies now?

Olympics Theme

This year the Olympics are being held in Beijing, China on August 8 to 24 2008. This is an excellent opportunity to use current events in your programming. Our centre likes to use this opportunity to experience foods from other countries, learn new national anthems and color flags from around the world in addition to practicing Olympic sports, having our own opening and closing ceremonies, practicing team work and keeping track of how our favorite countries are doing in the medal count.

Fundraising for Daycare

Let’s face it; daycare is not a big money business. Year after year, Supervisor’s and Daycare Boards scratch their heads for creative new ways to fundraise for program supplies, furnishings, trips and playground equipment.

Here are some ideas of events and programs that have served my centers well over the years:

Interviewing for a Daycare Cook

A few weeks ago, I posted Interview questions for ECE Teachers. Since then, I've also been interviewing for a cook for our daycare. This is a part-time position, and we really need to find someone who is reliable, and enjoys spending time with kids. Not only that, as someone preparing food for children, it's important that they are able to create nutritious, tasty foods, that also meet any medical needs - like the ever present nut allergies.
